Dear Everyone:

This abstract painting of a butterfly
was inspired by my own photograph.
See yesterday's post.

It combines the folk art image of
the butterfly with an abstract backdrop.

Dear Everyone:

I was thrilled when I spotted these flowers
against a salmon-coloured backdrop wall.

The lush flowers against the salmon
made me think of late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
She was often pictured with flowers in her hair.

Butterfly and blossoms 2013

Dear Everyone:

I went to capture a shrub with white
blossoms with the backdrop of
a stream.

Fortuitiously, a butterfly landed
on one of the blossoms as I was doing
a close-up.

It was a matter of being at the right
place at the right time.

Don McKay. Don is an award-winning poet.
He has taught at several unviersities and
written several books. He currently resides
in Newfoundland. He often writes on nature.

ASTONISHED

astounded,astonied, astunned, stopped short
and turned toward stone, the moment
filling with its slow
stratified time. Standing there, your face
cratered by its gawk,
you might be the symbol signifying eon.
What are you, empty or pregnant? Somewhere
sediments accumulate on seabeds, seabeds
rear up into mountains, ammonites
fossilize into gems. Are you thinking
or being thought? Cities
as sand dunes, epics
as e-mail. Astonished
you are famous and anonymous, the border
washed out by so soft a thing as weather. Someone
inside you steps from the forest and across the beach
toward the nameless all-dissolving ocean.

Dear Everyone:

Here is my latest poem:


PIROUHETTES

Grasshoppers meander
Snakes slither
Birds cut through it
What about you
What animal would
you liken yourself to
Gazelles run
Dolphins leap
Jellyfish float
Or are you
like an athlete
Human that is
Do you pirouhette
like a ballet dancer
Or scrum like a
rugby player
Once you've answered
let me know

Peony duo 2013

Dear Everyone:

This first peony abstract was inspired by a photograph
of my own which I used as a photoreference for the
flower shapes in the painting:

This second abstract is the above painting deconstructed.
I took out the recognizable flower shapes and cleaned
up the cloudy colours using more clear vibrant colours.
I call the second abstract "peony deconstructed".
