Dahlia portrait II 2010

HPGdahliaportrait#32010
Dahliaportrait#32010

Dear Everyone:

Here is a second folk art painting
of a dahlia from my own
photoreference.

I like painting from my own
photos. It is hard to improve
upon nature and it avoids
copyright issues.

Hope you enjoy this work.

Helen.

Dahlia portrait I 2010

HPGdahliaportrait#22010
Dahliaportrait#22010

Dear Everyone:

It is a tradition to shoot
the dahlias at the Halifax Public
Gardens each fall.

This specimen had a lovely
colour scheme of pink and orange.

I used the shot as a photoreference for
a folk art painting.

I hope that you enjoy this
work.

Dear Everyone:
More shots in my series of downtown
images.

Particularly like the shots
of the house with the
peeling plaster. The yellow
door is also striking.

Hope that you enjoy these
images.

Clemente revisited 2010

Clementeportrait2010
Clementewatercolour#12010

Clementewatercolour#22010

Dear Everyone:

Saw 2 Francesco Clemente paintings
in the October isse of House Beautiful
mounted on a wall in a dining room.
The interior designer is a friend
of Clemente's.

Watercolours of horses they are
very striking.

Clemente resides in New York,
Italy and India. He was born in
Naples, Italy in 1952. He travelled
to India at the age of 19 years
and developed an interest in
Hinduism and Buddhism which
shows up in his work.

He has said that he is a a painter
by default as he didn't wish to
do or be anything else.

Clemente describes painting
as something he does and if not
he gets physically sick.
He sees it partly as manual
labour.

He reports that he may not
have put forward his best
signature work yet out of
a sense of procrastination.

He did collaborate with
Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel
Basquiat during the years
they were productive
(and alive) in the late 1970's.

He says that his peer's
opinion of his work means more
to him than the public as his
peers will be with him late
in life whereas the public may
not be. There is more permanency
with peers.

Hope you enjoy
this startling work.

Dear Everyone:

Some recent shots.

Some of the Halifax Public Gardens
and some of downtown.

I particularly favour the shot
of the wicker chairs on the porch.
I also like the shot of the vibrant
light illuminating the pink flower
beds in the Gardens.
Enjoy!

Dear Everyone:

I find Buddhism attractive
because it is contemplative.
I find gazing upon the
face of the buddha to be soothing.
Here are some buddhist images.

Two New Pieces 2010

Yellowwallflowertriptych2010
Photocollage#22010

Dear Everyone:

I have two new pieces to show
you.

The first is my wallflower
series. The term wallflower
refers to being personally
sidelined by illness.

In this piece I use my own
photograph of a dahlia as a backdrop.
Laid the backdrop on a horizontal
surface like a table or desk,
scattered fresh cut flowers
across the image and photographed it.

The yellow flowers beckoned to me
at the grocery store florist section
and this dahlia backdrop spoke to
me for this piece. The yellow flowers
glowed like sunshine.

The wallflower images are
shown in a triptych with some
text. The text is from a recent
photograph of a storefront with
text covering the surface of the
window.

The second piece is a collage
using mostly my own photographs.
I will be taking some art courses
this fall which teach collage
so I am looking forward to learning
more.

Hope you enjoy these images.

Helen.

Dear Everyone:

I grew up with horses.

My younger sister has a horse farm
in adulthood. She is a veterinarian
so this is a perfect set-up for her.

Whenever I go downtown
I check to see if the horses
are out at this stables
and they were this day.

After, a rocky start
where they all walked away
to see an employee on a
cigarette break they
wandered back in sight
and I got some good shots.
Hope you enjoy these images.
